Chapter 1

*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?
I think she is not afraid of the soldiers because she is to young to know who they are and what they are doing. She just thinks they are normal people.

*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?
I would've been very scared and I would want to run away. I would be so scared I would not know what to do.

Chapter 2

  • Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the
Nazis?Why?*
I think he did the right thing because if he didn't go with them they would've done something bad to him or his country.
  • What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?
Her sister died three years ago in a car crash, just a couple weeks before her weeding day.
  • How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?
Her family had changed by that they dont see who she wouldve married that much and they dont look through her things.

Chapter 3
  • Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?
I don't agree with her because you want to be courageous because you never know what's going to happen. Something might happen and you will not be ready.
  • What religion do the Rosens practice?
The Rosens are Jewish.
  • Predict what you think will happen next in the story.
I think that Ellen is going to stay with Annemarie untill the Germans stop looking for them.

Chapter 4
  • What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters?
The first chapter means that the girls should stop running because the gaurds at the cornors told them to and they said to stop rnning because they look like hoodlums when you run. the second chapter said that the mayor of the town always rides his horse around and that just saids who he is. The thinrd chapter is saying that the people that runs the botton place are not there anymore and the store is closed. They want to know where they went.
  • The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night
It is called "It Will Be a Long Night" because that was the night that Ellen spent the night at Annemarie and the soldiers looked at Ellen's house and no one was there. Then knew that Annemarie was friends with their family so they checked there. Where Ellen was hiding.
  • Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?
She spent the night at Annemarie's house because they found out that the soldiers were going to her house to take their family. She stayed there because she could act like they are sisters and she would not be caught.

They come to their apartmeant because they didnt find Ellens family at her house and they knew that they are very good friends with the Johansen.

I think they expect to find Ellen there or someone from their family hiding there.
3. Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
.She takes the necklace from her neck because it is the Star of David which is a symbol of a Jew
4. When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
He was trying to prove that Ellen is their child even though she had dark hair and no one else in their family had dark hair.
5. Do you think Annemarie is brave?
I think she is brave for keeping Ellen there and not telling anyone.
6. Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone?
She wants to go alone because if the soldiers see them they will think something is wronge because you usualy dont see the whole family.
7. What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”?
They are talking about the kids when they say cigarettes.





Chapter 6
  • 1.For what reason is Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?
Its a good place because not a lot of poeple go there or really know about it there. Also not a lot of soldiers go there.
  • 2.Describe how you felt as you read this chapter.
I felt scared ehwn they were on the train and they see the soldiers abd glad that they found a good place for Ellen if she stays there.
3. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?
They were frightened because they thought they would tell the soldiers that Ellen was Jewish. So they would then take her away.
  • 4. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say?
    • I think they expected her to say who was a Jewish person that they could take. I thought she was going to say Ellen was one.
    • Chapter 7
      1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?.

    • They feel like nothing bad was happening that tey have nothing to fear because its so beautiful and not a lot of soldiers look around there.
      2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?

    Its different because she has Ellen with her, she hasnt heen there for a while, and this is the time they are looking for the Jews and it felt comforting that they mostlikle wont look there.

    3. Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship.




    They have a good friendship. They tease each other and help eachother out.

  • Chapter 81. What two statements does Uncle Henrik make that worry or puzzle Annemarie?
  • One was that tomorrow will be a good day for fishing and
  • Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesnt exist?
  • I think she did because she was living and ws on the earth.
    3. What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”?
  • I think he meant that tomorrow the soldiers might come a look around. When he saids fishing he means looking for Jews and taking them.




  • Chapter 91. Who do you think the ‘mourners” are?
    I think they are other family members or some more fisherman and the families.
    2. How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
    He told her that they lied to help he to be brave anf that they care for her.
    3. Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing.
    One time was when she went to her uncle and said that he and Mama were lieing to her. I think she was brave to face up to him.








    Chapter 10

    1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”?

    One familiar part to me is the part that said, "how good it is to sing psalms to our God."





    2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake?

    I think they were sad if they didnt know that she wasnt a real person.


    3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?


    She told him that she had typhus and that people could still get it now.





    4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?
  • Chapter 11
    1. What is in the casket?

    There are blankets and jackets in the casket for the people that came.
  • 2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
    I think he wanted to give the baby some medicine because he didn't want her to get sick in this bad weather.
  • 3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
    One example is that if she ran into the soldies at the cornor of the sidewalk and didnt know why they were there she would've been not as scared which makes them a little suspicious.
  • 4. Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.

  • Chapter 12
    1. Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat?

    I dont know is she will. I dont think she will.
  • 2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
    She realized that it is more painful for the people waiting because you think that if their five minutes late that something bad might've happened.
  • 3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety?
    I think she does because she doesnt want anything bad to happen to her. Also if they ran into the soldiers they would she would be caught.
  • Chapter 13
    1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik?
  • She volunteers because she wanted to help and she knew hoe important is was. Also her mom could not take it because of her foot.
    2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?
  • I think she doesnt tell her because she might not want to do it because if she gets caught she would be in big trouble if Mama told her.


  • Chapter 14
    1. There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf?
  • Annemarie is like Red Riding Hood because she went in the woods, she did it for her mom, and she runs into trouble. The soldiers ar like the wolf because they cause trouble for Red Riding Hood.
    2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?
She runs into the soldiers by helping her mom and giving someone something. That is when she confronts reality.
